Date: from 26 November 2011
Place: Castle Museum in Malbork
Address: Malbork, ul. Starościńska 1
The exhibition Amber contexts shows both the richness of the natural forms and colours of the living rock as well as art objects and jewellery made of it.
The aim of the exhibition is to present the collection of amber amassed by the Castle Museum since its establishment in 1961. 50th anniversary of the museum became the impetus to look at the collection of amber from a new perspective. Affects on how we currently perceive museum exhibitions undoubtedly has contemporary culture - such as how amber is presented in galleries, jewellery stores, or how is used in promoting the region. So it is necessary to take into account the different contexts, confronting historical works with recent acquisitions and new technology.
Known and repeatedly shown around the world the Malbork amber collection will be presented in a modern interior complemented by multimedia. To the climate of the exhibition will introduce us animation showing the amber forest from about 40 million years ago. Then, the laser light will lead visitors through a timeline showing the geological changes that led to the creation and movement of amber. In this part of the exhibition the viewer will be able to admire the natural specimens of amber and inclusions - that remains of plants and animals embedded in resin. In the next rooms there are graphic explanations, comments, and info kiosks that will deepen the knowledge on the topic using text and video materials.
Important for the exhibition is the context of space - both the formation of amber as well as its processing and finally the exposure. History of Baltic amber is in fact inextricably linked with the region around the today Gulf of Gdańsk. It was here where he was created in the distant Eocene epoch, gathered under the soil, and then, from Neolithic times was processed and used to produce useful objects, mostly ornaments.
The history of the Castle in Malbork - the capital of State of the Teutonic Knights and later the residence of Polish kings, is closely related to amber. In the Middle Ages amber has become a source of commercial power of the Order. From the amber was produced then primarily rosaries, but also relieves and figurative sculptures. To the exhibition, from the museum in Bratislava, will be brought the medieval candlestick of Queen Sophia, with amber statue of the Madonna, which is probably a gift from the Grand Master Konrad von Jungingen.
In modern times amber has become a favourite material of artisans who have produced the luxury items - small sculptures, goblets, caskets, and altars. The Malbork collection is famous for its unique masterpieces of amber formerly belonging to the Polish kings - Stanisław Leszczyński and Stanisław August Poniatowski. There is also no lack in objects made by prominent artists working in Gdańsk, including Michel Redline or Christophr Maucher.
