"Szkatułka" [Casket] is a selection of gems from the Danish Art Foundation collection. Jewellery can be borrowed by people, if they plan to participate in official events in the country and abroad. This allows to present it in the most appropriate form – when is worn by a person - after all jewellery is a "sculpture to wear." Initiative of the Danish Cultural Institute and the Embassy of Denmark to present the collection in Poland is associated with the acquisition from Poland by Denmark the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in January 2012.
Denmark has a long and rich tradition of supporting arts and culture. Already Hans Christian Andersen, a poor young man, could at the beginning of the nineteenth century, get an education, then create and travel many times thanks to the scholarship of the Royal Foundation ad usus publicos.
Today, one of the most important institutions performing a vital role in supporting artists is Danish Art Foundation operating since 1964 at the Ministry of Culture. Its purpose is to promote Danish art through various forms of financial support for creative activity. The Foundation offers three years long scholarships to artists, writers, composers and other creators – for the best lifetime creative scholarships – covers the costs of travel and work abroad, founds the awards for outstanding achievements, and supports the realisation of artistic projects in public space.
Since 1978, one of those teams, the Commission on the Art Crafts and Design, buys jewellery to support individual artists and present the jewellery art to a wider audience. However, purchased jewellery was kept in a vault until 2007, when the then President of the Committee, a graphic designer Mia Okkels, proposed to separate from the collections the smaller one, which could be available for the public. And so was "Szkatułka" created.
