A series of "Jack Freak Pictures" is the largest series of paintings, which Gilbert & George have created in their career. According to Michael Bracewell, a British journalist and art critic, this is a work of monumental size, consisting of themed episodes and motifs harmonized with the mood, is lined with an intense emotional charge. However, one visual element - the red, white and blue British flag, called the "Union Jack", which is itself an abstract, with geometric pattern – dominates on the whole cycle of colourful, worrying images. Garish, even funny symbol, perfectly recognizable in the international sphere, resonates in the myriad of socio-cultural spectrum, together with all its meanings, ranging from national pride and indifference ceremony to pop culture and civil disobedience. Its historical and symbolic presence is both the heart and backbone of the series Jack Freak Pictures, the bombastic project, iconic, ambiguous and absurd.
