The Crane over the Motlawa River is the most characteristic and unmistaken symbol of Gdańsk. Back in the Middle Ages it was the largest port crane in Europe handling cargo and putting up ship masts. It also served as an uncommon city gate.
The reconstructed driving mechanism inside, still in working condition, is an immense wooden wheel originally propelled by men literally walking in it.
Today the majestic Crane, a fine specimen of the historic port facilities, sets an excellent background for the rich collection of the National Maritime Museum.

A unique monument of the fortification art, the Wisłoujście Fortress is located in the immediate vicinity of the Westerplatte peninsula. The name Wisłoujście (the mouth of the Vistula) dates back to the period when the Vistula had its estuary north of the Wisłoujście Fortress

The idea that inspired the erection of the building referred to the legendary King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.
The first Artus Court came into being in Gdańsk around 1350. At the beginning it served as a place for knights to meet, but after 1476 it changed character from a building for knights to one for civil purposes and became a place for social and business meetings. It was noted as the most democratic place in the country.

Polish Post in Gdańsk was created following the Versailles Treaty of 1919 and the Paris Convention of 1920. The defence of the post offi ce was one of the fi rst battles of the Second World War.
The Germans attacked the post offi ce on the 1st of September 1939 at 04:45 at exactly the same time as the attack on Westerplatte began. The post offi ce workers defended the building until 19:00. All of the post offi ce workers were executed without the right to defend themselves. The Museum of Polish Post in Gdańsk was opened on the 40th anniversary of the Nazi attack on Poland.

Built in the years 1612-1614 according to a design drafted by Abraham van den Blocke, in the Renaissance style. Stone sculptures adorning the attic date back to 1648 and they were carved by Piotr Ringering. They present an allegory of citizen’s virtues: Prudence, Justice, Piety and Harmony. The building adjacent to the Golden Gate is the Manor of the St. George’s Guild, erected by J. Glotau in the years 1487-1494, in the late-Gothic style.
